The flush of Gabe’s blood and the tingle of the incredible intimacy from their

lovemaking still lingered beneath her skin once they’d dressed and he’d shimmered

them out of her apartment. A musty smell immediately filled her awareness, and she

glanced around them, her enhanced vision making it easy to tell they were somewhere

that hadn’t seen people in some time.

Gabe watched her with tender eyes and a little grin, as though he knew something

she didn’t. Casting a confused look at him, she stepped away to explore the darkness.

The ceilings were high, and the thud of her boots echoed through the cavernous room.

There was a hall leading off in one direction with doors that stood ajar. She could make out enough to know they led to more rooms. However, this one held her attention the

most. With one final look down the hall, she turned back to a stained-glass window that spanned most of the wall near the ceiling in the main room. It was a gorgeous mosaic

pattern with colors that still shone vibrantly even beneath the layers of dirt. When the sun rose in the morning, that window would cast shadows of color through the entire

room. It would be amazing.

Beneath it there was a set of French doors, and she narrowed her eyes at him over

her shoulder. His gaze was still soft, but the twist of his lips let her know he was up to something.

“Well, don’t you want to know what’s behind door number one, baby?”

Curiosity wasn’t one of her better qualities, but it was her favorite, so she walked

briskly across the hardwood floor and pulled the doors back. Before her the entire Bay

stretched out, the broken light from the moon danced across the waves, and the amber

glow of the Bay Bridge twinkled over the dark surface to her right. They were on the

top floor of a building that rivaled the Incog building. He heart slammed against her

ribs as the possibilities fanned out in her imagination.

“Gabe, what is this?”

“Our legacy.” He shimmered to her; his deep voice blew warm against her ear,

and his arms wrapped around her from behind. She folded her arms over his, holding

him to her, and craned her neck to look up at him. His green gaze was luminous as he

kissed the tip of her nose. “This, my little mate, is the location of the new Bay Territory Outpost and where we will raise our children.”

Kel looked back out over the Bay again as his words penetrated her shock.

“Outpost,” she echoed, too afraid to hope. “What’s that even mean?”

“All seven Houses of the Bay area have agreed to contribute to the outpost both

financially and with manpower. Marshals from every House will be stationed here with

the full force and authority of their Houses to help police the inner cities and enforce and protect the laws of our people. All our people. I never want another crossbreed child to suffer because she has nowhere else to go, no one to stand up for her.
